The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey - Where Art and History Intersect

The Kinsey Collection: Shared Treasures of Bernard and Shirley Kinsey - Where Art and History Intersect offers an inspirational journey through five centuries of African American history, culture and heritage. The exhibition celebrates Bernard and Shirley Kinsey’s passion for collecting objects of extraordinary significance over the 40 years of their marriage, illuminating the often untold story of African-American achievement and contribution.

To honor the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, Wells Fargo has joined with the Harvey B. Gantt Center to present the collection’s fine art and rare artifacts examining 400 years of the African- American experience, including an early copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. Letters penned by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and a first-edition book of poetry by Phillis Wheatley meet works by renowned African-American artists including Romare Bearden and Henry O. Tanner.

Art and history intersect in this phenomenal collection created to educate and inspire.
