About This Program
Visit the Gantt and learn about hip-hop dance! This beginner, family-friendly hip-hop session is incredibly fun and high energy. The class focuses on breaking down hip-hop dance fundamentals while exploring musicality and body placement. No matter your age or dance ability, all are welcome. Quoting the instructor, Alex White, "There's always space on the floor for you!"

About The Instructor
Alex White is a BroadwayWorld-winning choreographer with professional experience in movies, commercials, variety shows, and more. White is the former dance captain for the Charlotte Hornets and began his dance career on Broadway, as an ensemble cast member of Monty Python's Spamalot. White started his formal dance training at the age of 19, in the styles of jazz, modern, hip-hop, and West African dance.
White is also a teacher and enjoys working with youth. His production company, Alex White Productions, produced commercials and tours for corporations and groups including Coca-Cola, Target, Chicago, We Are Hip Hop, Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, Petey Pablo, and more.

About The Gantt Golden Year Dancer-In-Residence
LaTanya Johnson’s rhythmic journey blends the art of movement and storytelling through voice, theater, and visual arts.
Johnson choreographed and provided movement coaching for many productions including, A Raisin in the Sun, Seven Guitars, Ain't Misbehavin’, The Bluest Eye, For the Love of Harlem, A Soldier's Play, and The Piano Lesson. She has worked with Theatre Charlotte, On Q Productions, Free Reign Theater Company, and Brand New Sheriff (BNS) Productions. In 2016, Johnson curated a dance series in celebration of the Gantt Center’s 40th Anniversary, entitled "Catch the Dance".
Johnson’s conservatory training includes Philadanco (Philadelphia Dance Company), Historical New Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia, and Urban Bush Women Summer Leadership Institute, to name a few. She is the founder and artistic director of the Sycamore Project, a Charlotte-based “artivist” initiative using the arts to advocate and promote social and environmental justice.
