About This Program
See the Gantt Center in a new light, After Dark...
Explore the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture during Gantt After Dark every third Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm. Guests are encouraged to explore the exhibitions at their own pace, purchase art made by local artists, and enjoy light fare with desserts provided by Imani’s Fusion Café’. You can also groove to live entertainment provided by our resident musicians, 5th + York. This month features a guided gallery tour of our current exhibitions, a painting workshop with local artist Cathay Dawkins, a creative making station with Gantt Center exhibiting artist Nellie Ashford, and at 7:00 pm, we open the rooftop to dance the night away with the rhythmic sounds of DJ Hot Rod.
All proceeds from the evening benefit the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity® Kappa League Mentoring Program.
Paint & Sip With Cathay Dawkins
Guests of all skill levels are encouraged to develop their own creative practice alongside local artist, Cathay Dawkins. Art supplies, instruction and a complimentary glass of wine are all included. Workshop begins at 7:00 pm. Advance registration is required. Cost for participation is $25 ($20 for members).
With These Hands: with Nellie Ashford
Make a new work of art with Gantt Center exhibiting artist, Nellie Ashford. Ashford is a folk artist whose work expresses cultural identity, community values, and uses realistic imagery that reflects a time gone by. The exhibition Nellie Ashford: Through My Eyes, features thirty newly crafted mixed-media works by this renowned, self-taught, Charlotte artist. Allow Nellie to share her experience living, learning and growing in Charlotte with you, as you create a new work of art with her at the Gantt Center. Workshop sessions begin at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm. Advance registration is required, cost for participation is $10 ($5 for members).
Parking: Please park in the Duke Energy garage (101 W. Stonewall Street entrance) or The Green garage (435 S. Tryon Street) to receive special discounted parking.
