  • About The Teaching Artist

Christopher "Sancho" Smalls, was born in Beaufort, SC, and raised in the rich Gullah culture of the coastal sea islands. While in Beaufort, he developed an appreciation for the intimacy and instinctual beauty of visual art. He received his Bachelor's in Fine Arts from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC in 2014. It was there that his traditional mediums such as painting, drawing, and mixed media, intersected with wearable art, fashion, and computer-aided design. Now living in Charlotte, he primarily uses photography as his tool to create empowering themes that highlight minority subjects. He aims to find himself within the process of creating each piece and embraces the transformative quality of photography. He adopted the moniker Sancho Smalls, the name of his 4th great grandfather, in 2019 as a tribute to his ancestry and his evolving future as an artist.
