Family First: The Art of Healing

Ages:
8+
Cost:
$10 per participant
  • About This Program

Join us at Family First in March as we explore the power of family bonds and using art as a tool for healing.

Throughout history, Black women and men have been creating art, music, food dishes, literature, quilts and so much more, using their ingenuity and the materials they had available to them. These creations spoke and still speak to joy, healing, freedom, love, revolution and the sheer act of being. Participants will design their own healing journals and personalize both the covers and the inside pages to fit their unique needs.

Some of the techniques used to create healing journals can be seen in the new exhibition, A Superlative Palette: Contemporary Black Women Artists. A variety of materials will be used, including watercolors, paint pens, patterned/textured paper, rhinestones and other objects.

  • About the Teaching Artist

Kimberly Turner is a jewelry designer, visual artist, visual storyteller, creative director and educational consultant. She designs unique pieces of jewelry, art and short films and campaigns and uses them to tell stories for Elizabeth In Pearls, her business named after her grandmothers - Elizabeth and Pearl. She is inspired by color, pattern, texture, nature and her ancestors. Turner takes that same creativity into classrooms and learning spaces, to facilitate workshops for children, youth and adults.
