  • About This Program

Enjoy an afternoon at the Gantt for a special screening of the film, Space is the Place. All Classic Black Cinema films this season were released in 1974 - the year of our founding - to celebrate the Gantt Golden Year, our 50th anniversary!

Sun Ra, space-age prophet, shaman-philosopher, and avant-jazz keyboardist/bandleader, lands his spaceship in Oakland, CA and presumed lost in space for a few years. With Black Power on the rise during this time, Sun Ra proclaims himself "theater-destiny."

Uniquely explore the theme of 'space' and don't miss the chance to experience this classic film in a vibrant and culturally rich atmosphere.

  • About Classic Black Cinema Series

Specifically designed as a vehicle to expose the community to the vast artistic value black film has had throughout the years, the goal of the film series is to appeal to as diverse a population as possible and further the appreciation of Black cinema.

Curator and host, Felix Curtis, came to Charlotte from the Oakland/San Francisco Bay area where he curated The San Francisco Black Film Festival and Black Filmworks, the annual film festival component of the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame, where he later served as Executive Director.
