  • About This Program

A special program in honor of Black History Month, the Gantt partners with Charlotte Mecklenburg Library (CML) to provide tangible ways our community can uncover elements of their ancestry.

Unlock the secrets of African American genealogy with this presentation, navigating the challenges of tracing our ancestors. Explore crucial records like slave schedules, free Negro registries, cohabitation records, and more! Discover effective strategies using census clues to trace lineage before 1865.

Guided by Danielle Pritchett, a genealogy librarian with CML, participants will actively use provided tips and tools with step-by-step guidance for a greater historical context and discovery. This experience happens in MODA, our digital arts studio, where participants have access to computers for personalized research.

Guests are encouraged to bring any older family documents that may contribute to findings.
