Black Carolina Artist Residency Reception

Cost:
Free
  • About This Program

Join the community celebration of the Gantt's first Black Carolina Artist Residency cohort, coupled with an interdisciplinary exhibition by its five artists from North and South Carolina. To honor their completion of the residency, the cohort will share reflections and highlights from their experience in the Black Carolina Artist Residency, the intentionality behind their displayed works, and next steps in their artistic careers.

The newly created works in this small exhibition (on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Gantt) are the result of each artist’s time in the 6-month residency, which happened January-July 2024. The artists’ exhibited work has a social justice and equity focus that reflect the residency's foundational view that our community is only as strong as its artists.

This reception is a great opportunity for the community to both connect with the five Black Carolina Residency alumni members and network with artists in the Black Carolina Collective (BCC), an intentionally curated community of Black artists from the Carolinas, whose members receive exclusive development opportunities. Black artists of varying disciplines and career levels are encouraged to join this reception to learn more BCC, how to be a BCC member, and how to apply to the 2025 Black Carolina Artist Residency.

The reception will include light bites and beverages.

  • About the Black Carolina Artist Residency

The Harvey B. Gantt Center's Black Carolina Artist Residency is a result of the Wallace Arts Initiative's support, and is our aim to strengthen and sustain the well-being of our organization and community through the growth, dreams, and contributions of artists as community leaders.

The Black Carolina Artist Residency selects a yearly cohort of 5 diversely talented Black artists from the Carolinas to be developed with an equity and social justice lens and to implement in-community projects informed by their work.
